What the hell is going on here?
It's now a year and a half since Bilal Hussein of the AP was detained by the US military as a terror suspect. He has been charged with nothing. But he is still detained. Sami al-Haj, a cameraman for al Jazeera, has been in Gitmo for six years on similar grounds - and again without any charge being brought against him. Guilty until proven innocent by Sean Hannity seems to be the new standard of American justice in this war - and it's particularly dangerous when the government is empowered to arrest and indefinitely detain journalists without due process of any kind. Glenn Greenwald helps keep these cases alive.

mtippett, Good stuff. Being in Miami we know of over 50 journalists on that same Island who are not getting the hotel treatment those at gitmo are getting. In fact if people want to do a study on how journalists are really tortured they only have to look a few miles from Gitmo it is right in front of them.

That may or may not be true but in my lifetime I remember the US as being the standard bearer for respect of civil liberties and not comparable to tyrannical regimes. It's sad when the only defence of US practices is to refer to another country's gulag.
You think this is ok?

mtippett, you've convinced me you've done the work - it's authentic. I also think that you've been fair and thorough.
It's disappointing that the US isn't the only country holding journalists and people without trial or charges. There's still a man in ultra-maximum security at Kingston penitentiary in Ontario who has been held for over 5 years now with no charges. His lawyer doesn't even know the charges against him.
