Mexico's Special Support Force Commander has sent a further 500 troops to Tijuana in the north of the country in an effort to stem the drug-related violence there.

Mexicans Move on Drug-Violent Tijuana

Mexico, Sep 27 (Prensa Latina) Special Support Force Commander Rodolfo Cruz confirmed the arrival of an additional 500 troops Wednesday, part of Operation Tijuana to fight an escalation of drug-related violence in Mexico's principal city bordering the US.

Tijuana is the worst hit by executions related to drug trafficking, said the federal official; therefore, the troops will stay for an indefinite period.

The battle to control market and border reached its climax in late April, when 57 murders were reported, with at least 218 people killed so far this year.

Authorities decided to beef up the force already deployed permanently in the area in the wake of the killing of two State Preventive Police by organized crime.

"Far from decreasing the guard, actions will be intensified as part of Operation Lower California," Cruz stressed.
