Tragic death may be a lovers spat.
An NYPD cop returning from work was shot dead in her new Long Island home yesterday, and her police-officer fiancé was later led out of the house in handcuffs and grilled by police, authorities said. Sonia Garcia, 28, was found dead, having taken a gunshot wound to the chest, by Suffolk County Police just before 6 a.m. Her fiancé, Alexis Chaparro, 27, had called 911 and said Garcia had been shot in their Bay Shore home.“He said he heard a shot and found her in the bedroom,” said Detective Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick.
A neighbor said Chaparro, a former Golden Gloves boxer who worked at the Police Academy and fought on the NYPD boxing team, said, “Why are you doing this? It hurts,” as he was taken away in cuffs.
Questioned but not charged, he was released later in the day as cops continued to investigate.
“It is not a suicide,” Fitzpatrick said. “We are now investigating all aspects of [Chaparro’s] story. She didn’t shoot herself.”
