Residents attack police post in Papua village, one killed
Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA News) - Police manning a post in Banti village,
Tembagapura, Mimika District, Papua Province, fatally shot a local
resident who was among a mass of people who attacked the post early
Friday at around 6 a.m. local time.
The police fired warning shots as the crowd consisting of men and women
threw rocks at the post, Papua provincial Police Chief Insp Gen Max D
Aer told ANTARA here on Friday.
another resident was injured by one of the police`s warning shots, he said.
Aer could not give a detailed account of the incident, saying only he
believed the attack was triggered by people`s resentment at the
intensive sweeping operations the police had been conducting of late.
He said the situation in the village at noon on Friday had begun to return to normal.
Security agencies in Papua have stepped up their monitoring operations
in the field in anticipation of illegal activities ahead of the
anniversary of the banned Free Papua Organization (OPM) on December 1.
