For three long weeks in October, 2002, a gunman dubbed the “D.C.
Sniper” held the people of the Washington area hostage, randomly
shooting and killing 10 people as they went about their daily lives.
Originally attributing the sniper-style shootings to a single person,
it took police 23 fear-filled days to link John Allen Muhammad and Lee
Boyd Malvo, 17, to the attacks. When Mildred Muhammad, John’s ex-wife,
first met her husband, he “had a beautiful smile; he was very sensitive
to conversation, helpful and sincere.” Now, after years of domestic
abuse and running for her life, she describes him as “manipulative,
selfish and mean-spirited.” Here, Mildred tells the lesser known story
of domestic abuse, sleeping with the enemy and the true target of
Muhammad’s shooting spree: Herself.
