Stolen Computer's Flickr Account Captures Thief
On Friday, Workspace celebrated it's first birthday. This open, creative, alternative working environment in Gastown has enjoyed a successful venture so far. Last week it was also named the best reason to get out of bed in the morning (and go to work) in the Georgia Straight's 'Best of Vancouver'. It has also been host to various tech community events such as DemoCamp and BarCamp - always welcoming geeks, nerds and tech evangelists with open arms and kick ass coffee.
Unfortunately last week someone broke in and stole 6 computers, including the big iMac at the front counter. You know... the one everyone uses for Flickrbooth fun?
They took with them four laptops and our two iMac's. We have the crime on tape, but weren't able to capture a high res. image. [billmcewen]
This morning Kris Krug was checking one of Workspace's Flickr accounts and noticed something strange... a photo of a tattooed man, "me", uploaded to the account. Sirens started to go off and everyone soon realized that this was more than likely the thief (or one of them). He was using the stolen computer to upload photos of himself to Flickr without thinking to log into his OWN Flickr account. Busted.
If you know this man, or his tattoos or anything that can identify him, please email INFO [at] ABETTERPLACETOWORK [dot com]
UPDATE 09/25: This photo (as of this morning) has 199,743 views on Flickr, thousands of Diggs, was featured at the top of the 6 o'clock CTV news in Vancouver last night and is in the Globe and Mail this morning. Talk about coverage!
UPDATE 09/26: The man in the photo has turned himself in to Victoria Police, according to an article in today's Vancouver Sun.
Workspace is incredibly happy to see the man step forward. He claims to have bought the computer from a friend of a friend, but returned the iMac and hopefully has more information that could lead to the capture of these criminals.

Miss604, thanks for posting this here! Interestingly, one of our contribs from Michigan saw your story on Flickr first before he saw it here. The web works in mysterious ways. Hopefully it also works in wonderful ways, restoring Workspace's computers to them ASAP. We love Workspace!

Miss604, good stuff. I just love the stupidity of criminals, especially petty thieves. Brilliant job of organizing this material, with good links embedded in a way that doesn't impede the flow of the material, but offers the other resources in an easily-accessible way. Bravo! (And do let us know how all this comes out.)

What a crazy story... in a former life, I worked at the Mac place where the Workspace lads got these machines. I take this somewhat personally, as I took great joy in working with Bill and Dane.
The guy above looks kinda like George off of Grey's Anatomy, no?

Miss604, I like this story.
Good job. I have mentioned your post in a blog entry of mine in Italian :)
Also since I've seen that Bill MacEwen posted a video on YouTube with footage from the surveillance cam at Workspace, I have just added it here. :)
