It has been said many times by many people that the Chiocago Cubs have
the greatest fans in baseball. They always sell out, they're always
there to the end, and all this for a team that is the epitome of losing
in professional sports. They're knowledgable about the game, and yes
they love their Cubs in sickness and in health, 'till death do them
finally part. Wrigley Feild is a monument in baseball. The character
and history in that place is unmeasurable, not to mention it is a great
place to see a game. The fans love their beloved Wrigley almost as much
as they're cubbies.
And yet, there is a large difference between them and Sox fans
and Yankee fans and Cardinal fans; these fans, want desparately to win.
To be a great fan one must go farther than loving one's team with
unconditional devotion, but also must be completely engulfed by the
idea of winning. It would seem logical that these two things would go
hand in hand but in Chicago, remarkably they somehow are segregated. It
doesn't appear to matter one way or another to the Cub faithful
wheather they win or lose. They expect to lose and do lose without any
visible or tangible displays of displeasure. In fact, by the seventh
inning stretch, everyone is too drunk to realize, or care weather the
team is winning or losing, or to realize that Mike Ditka is not a good
singer, it would all be news to them. It seems to be more of a joke to
them. All they talk about in bars and in wrigleyville and in the stands
is how terrible and hopeless they are. But it is always said with a
goofy smile on their face. The criticism is also always followed by a:
"but we love 'em anyway" or something to that affect. Weather the team
wins or loses the whole game is one big carnival of laghter and singing
and beer. And in my experiences there, everyone is happy to tell you
about it. In places like Fenway Park, the fans die every night the team
loses. It is absolutely miserable leaving the stadium. No one looks at
it logically: that life goes on and there is another game of this 162
game season tomorow night. No, life is over, because the team is
they're life. I'm not saying that is a healthy way to live, I'm just
saying that's how it is, and that's what makes great fans. It's gotta
be about winning. Maybe the years of losing have caused the fans to
become delusional, or even caused them to decide in their minds that
the actual outcome of the game is irrelevant, because they know that if
it matters it will disapoint. Maybe the fans had no choice. May be it
was give up on winning or give up on the Cubs so they chose to give up
winning. But whatever the reason the Chicago Cubs have become a
celebration of losing and their fans metaphorical patients in the
insane asylum of baseball.
