Geert Wilders, a controversial member of the Dutch parliament, is making a movie in which he wants to show us his conviction about the Islam. He will prove the Koran is in no way as peaceful as the Muslims say. The movie is called ‘Fitna’ which is Arabic for ordeal but sometimes also for anarchy and civil war. The movie is about to appear in a couple of weeks from now. In some countries in the Middle and Far East people are already upset about this film of which nobody has seen a single frame and have even demonstrated against it (Afghanistan). They demand a presentation ban ordered by the Dutch Government.
Therefore there is a certain resemblance with the Danish Cartoons the Dutch Government is concerned about possible repercussions in and outside The Netherlands. It is not possible to forbid the film in advance because of our ‘freedom of speech’ principle. When somebody –a person or a group- is offended after seeing the film he can go to court in order to get a presentation ban. It is also possible to serve a writ of libel against Mr Wilders. Then it’s up to the judges.
I agree very much with this procedure.
