Cocaine Kills

A BOY aged 11 has been arrested in possession of cocaine, the Record can reveal.

The shock case highlights an alarming boom in the drug's use in Scotland.

New figures confirm the number of people arrested for cocaine possession in Strathclyde more than doubled between 2004-5 and last year - from 674 to 1751.

And the number arrested for supplying the class-A drug soared by 10 times during the same period - from 79 to 708.

As well as arresting the schoolboy, police charged a 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman, with intent to supply cocaine.

Hundreds of teenagers, including girls as young as 14, have also been arrested for both possession and supply.

Our probe found the 11-yearold boy was caught in possession of cocaine in Strathclyde's L division - which covers Argyll, Bute and West Dunbartonshire - in 2004-5. The 74-year-old woman was charged with supplying the drug in the same division in 2006-7.

The 79-year-old man was charged with possession with intent to supply in Falkirk in

another disturbing insight as to what is really happening to children. Our society at all levels has become drug infested. What can a parent do ? to safeguard their precious children from this epidemic of drug use.

Education about drugs will not stop the adventurist child who misguidingly thinks its ok to try this or that. To think the persons dealing the stuff are pensioners is also a horror story in its self.

Truly dread to think what this drug fueled society will be like in twenty years from now.

Horrible! The ages of kids getting caught up in this kind of stuff is getting lower and lower; when will it stop? When toddlers are foaming at the mouth?!

An 11 year old child should not be arrested.  Criminalizing a child for something an adult supplied him with is uncivilized.  He should be taken to a facility where he can receive intervention for the use of drugs and also have his family situation evaluated.  Putting him in jail does not address the underlying problem of how is he getting the drugs and why is he compelled to use them.

The suppliers in this case are the criminals and should be prosecuted accordingly.  I remember seeing the movie Train Spotting years ago about the drug culture in Scotland, which really is no different than anywhere else in the world.  It's a global problem, not just in Scotland, and until countries can unite in some kind of effort to decriminalize addiction and treat it as an illness and reduce the demand for drugs, then the demand for drugs and the trafficking will continue.

In the United States, Mexico and South America are the suppliers.  The "war on drugs" has never been successful here, and the insidious drug culture continues.
