1984 is about a negative utopia. George Orwell wrote 1984 in 1949.

Winston Smith commits the thought crime of doubting Big Brother and the government he leads. The story takes place in Airstrip One (England) which is part of Oceana which also includes the area of North America. The government is called Ingsoc (English Socialism). Winston falls in love with Julia and they are betrayed by O'Brien, a member of the Inner Party.

Orwell had been a Communist but he was outraged by the totalitarian regime of Stalin and renounced Stalin and communism. I maintained a belief in Democratic Socalism.
