Galle has been Sri Lanka’s stronghold – they have won six of their last eight Tests on the traditionally spin-friendly surface, and Rangana Herath and Ajantha Mendis, the frontline spinners, would be expected to play key roles.
Herath grabbed 11 wickets as Sri Lanka crushed New Zealand by ten wickets in the last Test played in Galle, while Mendis, set to play a Test for the first time since May 2011, is a proven match-winner with 62 wickets in 16 Tests.
Sri Lanka will be at full-strength barring Mahela Jayawardene, who has been ruled out of the series due to a finger injury, and have to rally around Angelo Mathews, who will lead Sri Lanka for the first time in Test matches. And Thilan Samaraweera’s sudden retirement provides an ideal opportunity for some of the youngsters to make a mark for themselves in the middle-order.
Sri Lanka’s batting has been bolstered by the return of Kumar Sangakkara, who missed the third and final Test against Australia in January due to a finger injury.
They go into the series with a 12-0 win record against Bangladesh, who will be without Shakib Al Hasan, their best player, due to a calf injury.
Bangladesh have struggled at the Test level since their entry in 2000, losing 65 of their 75 matches so far, winning just three.
But Mohammad Ashraful, who has called the upcoming series his second coming in international cricket, was confident his side will put up a good show. “It doesn’t matter what happened in the past,” he said. “Ours is a new side and Sri Lanka are also going through a transition. It should be a good contest.”
Bangladesh will also play three One-Day Internationals and a one-off Twenty20 International match on the month-long tour.
