The Emmys created a lot of buzz in microblogs and shed considerable insight on how people received this year's awards - for the most part viewers expressed boredom,  punctuated only by the odd comedic zinger from solid attendees such as Ricky Gervais and Jeremy Piven.

  • Mad Men was the first basic cable program to win Outstanding Drama, beating out other popular shows like Dexter and Lost for the top prize.
  • 30 Rock nabbed Outstanding Comedy for the second year in a row, not an unjustifiable move but it would have been nice to see Curb Your Enthusiasm or The Office get some Emmy love.
  • Bryan Cranston, formerly of Malcolm in the Middle, truly deserved his Outstanding Lead Actor award for his role in Breaking Bad.  Notable runner ups were Jon Hamm of Mad Men, who won the honour last year, and Gabriel Byrne for his psychiatrist role on In Treatment.
  • Surprisingly, Alec Baldwin triumphed with 30 Rock over Steve Carrell's The Office portrayal for the Lead Actor in a Comedy spot.
  • John Adams was the big winner in the Miniseries department - Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney accepting Outstanding Lead Actors in a Miniseries awards, Tom Wilkinson won Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries, and the show also took Best Miniseries overall.
  • Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert also received Emmys - Stewart for best Variety, Music or Comedy show (beating out Colbert and SNL), while Colbert's writing team won their respective award.

Overall, it seemed the show was basically a bit of a bore, but isn't this sentiment consistently repeated year after year, award show after award show?  Three tedious hours marked by fleeting moments of entertainment when your favourite actor takes the stage for a brief interlude into the boring-ness of it all.

Terri Potratz, I like this story. It's good stuff. Interesting to see that drama on cable is getting the recognition it deserves.
