Carrie Underwood on Red Carpet for Grammy awards 2009

Tonight we're watching the 51st annual Grammy Awards, which will feature a performance-heavy schedule in order to win back a dwindling audience.

Tonight could be a big night for Lil' Wayne, who, despite persistent Internet rumors, is not dead, and will be performing as well. M.I.A. is scheduled to perform, though she's nine months pregnant, even as the violence in her native Sri Lanka dominates headlines.

Also, there are more categories than I remember (110 categories across 31 fields, not all of which will be televised), such as Category 33: Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Pretty much everything played on mainstream Canadian radio would fall into that category, I think. Also, Category 89: Best Boxed or Special Limited EditionPackage. Huh? Oh, Nine Inch Nails is nominated, so maybe I'll keep an eye on that one.

As for Category 101: Best Choral Performance, Tippett: A Child of Our Time has nothing to do with mtippett, as far as I'm aware.

As I'm more Tom Waits than T.I., I admit to not having heard some of the tracks and albums that feature in the main categories, but I predict a big night for Coldplay, whose Viva La Vida was a darling amongst critics and the public alike.

Also, if Danger Mouse doesn't win Producer of the Year (non-classical), I'll be quite cross indeed.

As for Category 90: Best Album Notes, I'm going with Kind of Blue: 50th Anniversary Collector's Edition, since they're the only ones I've read out of the nominees, though The Art of Field Recording: Volume I sounds kind of neat.

The awards will air at 8pm PST/EST on CBS and its affiliates in the US. Outside the US, just flick through the channels until you see people getting little gold gramophone statues. Here in Vancouver, it's on Global. I see that competing channels are backing away in terms of programming, but Teen Wolf is on at the same time: flipping between the two will be awesome.

[Update: indeed, Teen Wolf starts at 8pm. A werewolf basketball classic]

What was I talking about? Oh, yeah- watch for results both here and below.

As a side note, it'll be interesting to re-check the Pirate Bay activity map during the Grammys. I'm not advocating illegal fire-sharing, but I'm just sayin'.

Due to the time delay on the West Coast (where the event is actually held), we know the winners before the actual telecast, so don't read below if you crave suspense. Also, I'll be switching between the telecast, the microblogs, and Teen Wolf, so it may affect my coverage of this topic.

During Paul McCartney's and Dave Grohl's performance, a plush wolf toy is clearly visible on one of the speaker cabinets, so there we go.

Teen Wolf is awesome. And, as ESPN's Bill Simmons has pointed out on more than one occasion, it features arguably the greatest sporting performance by a movie character. Forget about LeBron James, Teen Wolf was simply unstoppable.
