The 'longlist' for the Man Booker prize has been released. I have a lot of respect for this literary prize because it is generally awarded to an impressive piece of work. Previous winners include:

2000 - Margaret Atwood - The Blind Assassin
2001 - Peter Carey - True History of the Kelly Gang
2002 - Yann Martel - Life of Pi
2003 - DBC Pierre - Vernon God Little
2004 - Alan Hollinghurst - The Line of Beauty
2005 - John Banville - The Sea
2006 - Kiran Desai - The Inheritance of Loss
2007 - Anne Enright - The Gathering
2008 - Aravind Adiga - The White Tiger

I would recommend nearly all of the above, with the exception of Enright's The Gathering. That was just terrible. Indeed, I think I gave it to the charity shop before even finishing it.

This year's nominees, which "includes two former winners, A.S Byatt and J.M Coetzee, and two previously shortlisted writers, Sarah Waters and Colm Toibin" are:

AS Byatt - The Children's Book
JM Coetzee - Summertime
Adam Foulds - The Quickening Maze
Sarah Hall - How to Paint a Dead Man
Samantha Harvey - The Wilderness
James Lever - Me Cheeta
Hilary Mantel - Wolf Hall
Simon Mawer - The Glass Room
Ed O'Loughlin - Not Untrue & Not Unkind
James Scudamore - Heliopolis
Colm Toibin - Brooklyn
William Trevor - Love and Summer
Sarah Waters - The Little Stranger

I need to get reading!

Thanks for this. There have been some great past winners of the prize, though I'll admit I'm unfamiliar with several of this year's nominees. I need to get reading too!

Thanks for the recommendation and comment, Jarrett.

I don't think I've ever been as behind on my reading as I am these days and I do not accept the excuse that I'm busy!

Of this year's nominees, I only know A S Byatt - that's really sad...

Amy, I'm not too happy about my knowledge of this year's nominees either! :(

Thanks for the recommendation and comment.

Great list.  Need to get together a Booker Club this year perhaps!
