200th Anniversary of the Abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade by the UK
Did you know that 2007 marks the anniversary of the end of one of the darkest moments in UK history? 200 years ago abolitionists were successful in convincing the powers that be in the United Kingdom to end the transatlantic slave trade that had made England and her cities quite wealthy.
This didn't mark the end of slavery but it was one giant step in that direction. It would be several years later before the US and other countries would end their part in the transatlantic slave trade and even consider putting an end to slave labor.
But this year in 2007 celebrations, art exhibits, the release of historical documents, lectures, symposiums and historical walks have been organized by the British government and lay people to tell the story of one of the most inhumane periods in British and world history.
