NP Rank:
3D films need not to be in stereo
The BBC news channel reported that a number of new 3D films (in stereo) are about to be released. Unless 3D stereo films offer what normal films can't, 3D stereo films will remain a curiosity and will never become a mainstream format. Let me explain:
3D films need not to be in stereo; you can achieve almost the same result by using your camera in a specific way. All you need to do is to either rotate the object that you are filming or move the camera horizontal relative to the object. By doing this the viewer will have exactly the same 3D experience as with stereo pair pictures. This idea is demonstrated with the picture on the left in an animation at: www.science-animations.com/support-files/eenheidselatome11.swf . Just click and drag to experience the object in perfect 3D! The only difference is: with this technique all the 3D objects appear behind the screen while with stereo films the benefit is that the viewer will see objects also in front of the screen. The question is whether this benefit is worth all the trouble to make and view 3D stereo films.

Thanks for the fun demos. The 3D effect is emerging as mainstream if you consider that video games are so popular that those games find their way to the big screen, thanks to computer animators in Asia and India who are talented and work for a fraction of the cost in Western countries.
