American President-elect Barack Obama was featured on the cover of nearly every major newspaper in the world last week following his election win.

History-hungry folks cued up for hours in the days following, in order to purchase newspapers as remembrances of the historic occasion. But more enterprising collectors found they were able to resell them on eBay for up to $400.

Does this mark the case for their increased relevance or, as TechDirt suggest, a flash-in-the-pan trend of souvenir-driven media consumption?

Following last week's historic election of Barack Obama, there was a rush to buy up paper newspapers announcing the news, with the idea being that those newspapers would be quite valuable. In fact, some newspapers were quickly being resold on eBay for up to $400 -- and many buyers plan to preserve the papers, hoping they'll be worth even more in the future. Of course, it sounds as though many newspaper publishers got exactly the wrong lesson from this. Some publishers celebrated the rush to buy newspapers as evidence that newspapers were still relevant and that in "big events" people still turned to print papers. Except, that's not true. Publishers who believe that are deluding themselves. People got the actual news from the internet and TV. The newspapers just represent a souvenir of the event -- not the place to turn to for news about it. Newspapers are never going to figure out how to survive if they take the wrong lessons out of this. People bought newspapers because they could be saved (and resold) -- not because they were suddenly relevant.

As in other places around the world, news about Obama as the elected president of America were very important and transcendental. I found this newspaper last weekend walking near to the cliffs of Miraflores, one of the most popular neighborhoods in Lima, Perú

Several of my high school friends and I gathered together to watch the election returns. Most of us were holding our breath, almost afraid to believe we could pull off the victory without a hitch; we had seen so much happen with the last two elections. As the election returns poured in, things began to look hopeful. Then, they posted a countdown to the polls closing in the Northwest and together we counted down the seconds...and got ready to settle down for a tense few hours. Imagine our surprise when no more than 30 seconds later, NBC had declared the election for Obama! My friend Maureen kept taking shots of the screen, all the while saying, "Really guys?" I sat there in amazement, trying to soak in every second and basking in that incredible feeling of being a living part of history. It's one of those moments I shall never forget.

The next day, I knew I had to have the newspaper, to keep as a reminder of this momentous time! This headline says it all. No matter what, CHANGE has indeed come to America!

Aloha,
This is the Honolulu Advertiser, one of the leading
newspapers in the State of Hawaii and the lead
newspaper for the Island of O`ahu.

This is the historic Election coverage edition printed
the day after his nomination to President Elect of the
United States of America.

President Elect Barack Obama was born in Hawaii.
This is very exciting for the people of Hawaii to have
not only their first African American President, but
having his roots from Hawaii.

Aloha,

I watched Barack Obama get elected on the night of the election.  It was a very excited moment for my family and I.  Some people say we voted for him because he's black, and I am black also.

Being a community activist, I've always been politically involved with my neighborhood here in Atlanta, Georgia. Earlier, I had collected sovenir copy of the newspaper headlines when Atlanta won the Olympics in 1996 and also I obtained the "911" newspaper headlines in 2001. Now, in 2008, while working on Obama's election campaign, I purchased and wore "Vote for Obama" T-shirts and posted his election signs on my lawn. During this time I recorded with photographs of the packed auditorium voter precinct's "waiting rooms" of early interested patrons. So, with all of this promotions of Obama's campaign , I HAD to grab and PHOTOGRAPH this Atlanta Journal Constitution sovenir keepsake headline of this 2008 "HISTORIC WIN".
Last, but not least, Atlanta Journal Constitution Newspapers early in the campaign had endorsed Obama.

A photo of Obama "wearing" a photoshoped tshirt from the local Football team (Avai from florianopolis brasil).

in the images you can read: "Barack Is Avaiano Since he Was Born"
A joke about being Hawaiian. (in brasil Hawaii has a pronunciation of Avai as the football teams name)

I'm keeping my paper to pass on to my children! We're also keeping the newsweek from this week with Barack Obama on the cover.

This was one of the many newspapers laying around at High Street Hostel in Edinburgh, Scotland. My friends and I went there on November 5th (the day after the election) so it was cool to see all of this pro-American stuff for once. It's been a rough 8 years with the world saying mostly negative stuff.

Hopefully this will spark some hope and change in the world. :)

Last Saturday we went to the LA Times building to buy some copies of the historic headlined paper. It was thrilling to see the excitement over this election. We were two of maybe four caucasians in the line that stretched 75-100 people long at 9am. Some were buying a few copies, others, stacks, plus posters and this, the aluminum printing plate copy. Everyone was pleasant, and there was a real sense of relief. T-shirt vendors were out, as well. The woman at the door said she had only seen one other day like this: the day after 9/11. Probably safe to say that if 9/11 hadn't happened, this headline wouldn't have, either.

So what?

I hope they get $800  per copy, when Obama chokes on a watermellon seed in the oval office.
