Aaliyah: 8 Years After Her Death

Aaliyah, pop star and actress, was killed in a plane crash on August 25, 2001. Born Aaliyah Dana Haughton, the star was 22 years old when the twin-engine Cessna carrying her and her entrourage crashed just after takeoff in the Bahamas. The pilot was found to have had traces of alcohol and cocaine in his blood, and Blackwawk International Airways was sued for wrongful death.

It wasn't just the death of a star that saddened the public, but the public passing of someone whose potential had not yet been reached, the same as any time we hear of a young person dying too soon.

Her credits are easy to remember: three albums that were each certified double-platinum along with the aforementioned "Romeo Must Die," which helped to put her on Hollywood's map. Another film, "Queen of the Damned," was released after she passed.

After she died, "Aaliyah" became one of the top 100 most popular names for newborn girls in the US.
