Academy Award Nominations 2010: Nominees, Predictions, Favorites
The Academy Award nominations are out for 2010, and many people seem to have been taken by surprise reading the lists of this year's Oscar nominees. It was not so much the names that stood out, but the sheer numbers of nominees. Ten movies have been nominated for the Best Picture award versus last year's five nominees. Another surprising moment was that cinematographic sensation Avatar was nominated in nine out of the 24 categories. In contrast, Titanic, the very movie that Avatar beat as the top grossing movie of all time, was nominated for 14 Academy Awards, winning a whopping 11. There are still two months to go before the Oscars ceremony in March, but we have compiled a list of the movies who will win versus the movies that should win, but won't for a number of political, moral, ethical or historical reasons.
So here is our list:
1. Best Motion Picture
--will win: Precious
--should win: we were divided between A Serious Man, The Hurt Locker and Avatar this one, but the majority went with Up.
2. Best Director
--will win: James Cameron
--should win: Quentin Tarantino
3. Best Actor
--will win: George Clooney
--should win: George Clooney
4. Best Actress
--will win: Meryl Streep
--should win: Helen Mirren (by almost absolute majority)
5. Best Supporting Actor
--will win: Christopher Waltz
--should win: Christopher Waltz
6. Best Supporting Actress
--will win: Maggie Gyllenhaal
--should win: a tie between Maggie Gyllenhaal and Penelope Cruz
7. Original Screenplay
--will win: a tie between Up and Inglourious Basterds
--should win: a tie between Up and A Serious Man
