With the Oscars happening this weekend. I thought I would share my guesses... now, I will say. With the exclusion of Christopher Nolan(Director) and "The Dark Knight" from the top two slots. The Academy has once again shown how irrelevant it can be. When future generations look back at the 5 "Best Picture" choices. I do believe the term W.T.F. will come to mind... not that these are bad films. They are quite good. But still... you shouldn't snub the film that's been feeding you all year long.

Enough with that though... here goes...

BEST PICTURE... "Slumdog Millionaire"... Not even close. It seems to be this years darling. I forced myself to see it because non of the previews looked good to me. However, it was great.

BEST DIRECTOR... Danny Boyle(Slumdog)... I really don't think the others have a chance. Gus Van Sant will have to wait again.

BEST ACTOR... Richard Jenkins(The Visitor)... I'm going out on a limb with this one. One of the toughest categories. I'm not so sure "Milk" has the momentum. Plus Sean Penn has won before. Which would give Mickey Rourke the edge... and although Hollywood loves a comeback story. Rourke's history with the studios might mean he'll need to earn his statue with another great performance.

BEST ACTRESS... Kate Winslet(The Reader)... for losing so many times in the past. Oh, come on... it's not the first time this has happened. Many times for a lesser deserved performance. Which is not the case here.

BEST S. ACTOR... Heath Ledger(TDK)... if not. Then may hell engulf all of Hollywood.

BEST S. ACTRESS... Viola Davis(Doubt)... I hope so. This truly is a supporting role. Only one "extended" scene. But wow... so memorable. That said... putting your money on Penelope Cruz is not a bad idea.

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM... "Wall-E"... DUH... a no-brainer. I personally hated the movie. I could not get out of the theatre quick enough... if I had to hear "WwaaAHEEE" or "EEEVAHH" one more time. I was gonna scream. I did like the opening sequences and the Wall-E character was very cute. So I am willing to see his next adventure.

BEST ART DIRECTION... "Curious Case of Benjamin Button"... of all it's 13 nominations. I think this is one of it's best chances for a win.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY... "The Dark Knight"... a tough call. I could see "Benjamin Button" getting this one. However, I think the Academy will want to acknowledge Wally Pfister's work on "TDK". After all, it was shot using IMAX... not an easy thing to do.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN... "The Dutchess"... only because the Academy likes to dress queens... I mean royalty.

BEST FILM EDITING... "Slumdog Millionaire"

BEST MAKE-UP... "Curious Case of Benjamin Button"... this would seem obvious. Unless that qualifies as visual effects. Either way, quite amazing work.

BEST SOUND EDITING... "The Dark Knight"... both "Iron Man" and "Wall-E" have sound people who have a long history with the voters. So this one is up for grabs.

BEST SOUND MIXING... "Slumdog Millionaire"... but they do love "Wall-E". So he could run away with both sound awards... yet I think all the switching of scenes(and game show craziness) in "Slumdog" has the advantage.

BEST VISUAL EFFECT... "Iron Man"... this is the strongest category for "Iron Man". I do not think it deserves it. The effects in TDK were much more memorable and breath taking. Even it they were mostly "old school"... and the CGI on "Two-Face" was so damn good. But I think people tend to over look it... lets face it. Pretty much everything. No matter how top notch it was. Took a back seat to The Joker.

BEST WRITING(ADAPTED)... "Frost/Nixon" or "Doubt"... the only realistic shot for "Frost/Nixon". But I think "Doubt" wins.

BEST WRITING(ORIGINAL)... "Milk"... although I have not seen "Frozen River", "Happy-Go-Lucky", or "In Bruges" yet... I'm hearing good stuff about "Frozen" though.

In closing(my god, he's gonna shut up)... I can only see "Slumdog" running away with the evening. Otherwise, the accolades will pretty much be thrown all over the place.

Dale ;-)
