Irish actor Harry Towb has died of cancer at the age of 83 in his London home. Towb was born in Larne, County Antrim and grew up in Belfast before leaving Ireland to move to England in the 1950s.

His last role was in the popular British soap EastEnders as David, Janine Butcher's fiancee.

He is survived by his wife, actress Diana Hoddinott, children Emily, Daniel and Joshua, and three granddaughters.

Joshua said his father was a great family man who loved his work.

"He loved his family very much," he said.

"But he never liked not to be working.

"He worked all the way through his illness as long as he could, right up until a few months ago."

Towb was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and performed with the National Theatre.

He appeared in the films The 39 Steps, Patton, Digby the Biggest Dog in the World, and The Most Fertile Man in  Ireland among others.
