Alexis Tioseco: Filipino Film Critics Killed in Manila Home
Alexis Tioseco and girlfriend Nika Bohinc were found shot dead in a home robbery in Manila on Tuesday. Police were searching for 3 armed men and a maid, Criselda Dayha. The robbery/murder is believed to be "an inside job", in which the burglars might have gained access through the maid. Filipino director Raya Martin decided he will stay in Manila to mourn the loss of his friend, and he will not be attending the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) next week. His new film Independencia will be dedicated to Alexis Tioseco and Nika Bohinc, whose work were of great significance to the film community in Philippines and abroad, said Raymond Phathanavirangoon of TIFF.
The suspects fled the scene in the couple's vehicle with an undetermined amount of valuables, including a laptop computer, police said.
Police have interviewed the other maid in the house, Magdalena who had worked for the couple for three years. She told police that Dayha went to the store and then returned with the three men who gagged and tied her up. Police have also interviewed people at Dayha's old job.
Alexis Tioseco, 29, lived in Vancouver since he was 2 years old. He moved back to the Philippines in 1997. Tioseco started a website called Criticine, dedicated to Southeast Asian cinema. He was a full-time faculty member at the University of Asia and the Pacific.
Nika Bohinc, 30, was an accomplished journalist from Slovenia who was involved in several film festivals.
Tioseco had started a website on Southeast Asian cinema called Criticine, and Bohinc was the head of FIPRESCI in Slovenia, editor of Ekran magazine and was involved in the Ljubljana International Film Festival, Isola Cinema Film Festival and IndieLisboa.
Tioseco and Bohinc's good friend Jason Sanders wrote an article remembering the couple.
Alexis Tioseco's writing was published in Rogue: The Letter I Would Love To Read To You In Person.
