Today marks the 65th birthday of the great American writer, Alice Walker.  This Pulitzer Prize winner is best known for her landmark novel The Color Purple.  She has specialized in making the public more aware of the lives of  Afro-american women.  In 1989 and early 90s she wrote two more novels that dealt with the issue of female circumcision in Africa -- The Temple of My Familiar and Possessing the Secret of Joy.

Alice Walker was front and center in the voter registration movement in the 60s and remains an activist today.
