NP Rank:
Alice In Wonderland To Cross $1 Billion Mark...On Thursday?!
The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that on Thursday, Alice in Wonderland will cross the $1 Billion worldwide mark. As of this weekend, the movie has grossed $996.6 million, so chances are it already grossed a billion. So, why they're saying Thursday is a mystery. It's most likely because this weekend, Disney is releasing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time which is highly criticized for its white-washing. It's also a movie competiting with Sex and the City 2. So, they just want to head into the Memorial Day Weekend with some positive news...especially for the stockholders.
Now, here's something that The Hollywood Reporter has excluded - the reason for the film's worldwide success. The flick is doing well in markets like the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe but it's a huge hit in Japan. In Japan it has grossed over $100 million and has shown no signs of slowing down. Without Japan, Alice in Wonderland would have missed the mark by a few million or maybe more.
The film is the sixth to cross the billion dollar mark and the first Spring release to reach that milestone. In many ways it is a game changer since it's normally the Summer and Winter releases that accomplish this level of success. It may be difficult to believe, but Alice in Wonderland could end up as the highest grossing movie of 2010...and it was released in March!
