If EARLY estimates for Wednesday are accurate then Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel outgrossed Avatar by $3 million. The former opened in theaters today and grossed an estimated $19 million. Meanwhile, the latter, for the third straight day, grossed an estimated $16 million. I don't know why Avatar has grossed $16 million for three straight days but it has helped the movie gross over $100 million domestically and over $300 million worldwide.

There's more competition on the way this Friday (Christmas day) with the release of Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law. As well as the musical Nine starring an all-star cast which includes Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Nicole Kidman, and Kate Hudson.

Will all these movies be able to co-exist at the box office? Possibly. After this weekend no other film opens till January 8. So, that's two weeks for audiences to catch up.
