American Family Association Threatening Pepsi Boycott

The ultra-right Christian group known as the American Family Association (AFA) is threatening to boycott Pepsi over the company's support of gay rights issues.  The American Family Association specifically objects to a recent $1 million donation by Pepsi to gay rights groups, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG).

Started by Christian activist Rev. Donald Wildmon, the American Family Association is vehemently opposed to gay rights issues like same sex marriage and gay couple adoptions.  It has stated it will add Pepsi to its list of Fortune 500 companies to boycott for having a "pro-homosexual agenda."

Pepsi has a long history of supporting gay rights in the community and within its corporate environment.  Pepsi employees are expected to participate in sensitivity training and the company extends all benefits and leave given to heterosexual couples to same sex couples as well. Pepsi also has a zero tolerance policy for any sort of sexual harassment on the job, including that which targets GLBT people.

AFA, which was founded by Christian activist Rev. Donald Wildmon, objects to the Purchase, New York-based company donating $1 million to well-known gay rights groups, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), "to promote the homosexual lifestyle in the workplace," according to AFA's website. Spokespersons for the HRC and PLFAG could not immediately be reached for comment.

The organization denies that it "hates" homosexuals. "It is that love that motivates us to expose the misrepresentation of the radical homosexual agenda and stop its spread though our culture," the group said. Gay people who have long fought AFA would beg to differ.
Nonetheless, PepsiCo CEO Indra K. Nooyi has not taken AFA's advice to "remain neutral" in the culture wars. The number two soft drink company sponsors gay pride parades and bought advertisements in Out, a magazine aimed at gays, which features sexually provocative photographs. Moreover, AFA complains in a statement issued June 2 that PepsiCo employees are required to attend diversity training sessions which "promote the acceptance of homosexuality."

They are also the reason that we ended up with McCain, since that group couldn't stomach Romney, a Mormon, "not a real Christian", popular ex-governor of Massachusetts.
