It is amazing what you run into at Starbucks. I find a lot of people who are reluctant to talk, and sometimes when you find one who will, they don't really have much of interest to say. This time however, is different.
Lucy is a formal practicer of "Paganism" in the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Seattle area. Her choice of reading material the day I met her at the coffee shop was about how to emulate the ancient sex rituals of the past. She was reading about appeasing the spirits of fertility and fruitfulness through sex rites as practiced in the ancient middle east. It seems there were temple sex rites over which presided the most fruitful and productive people in the society. These were held en-mass once per year, but were performed by all in the society on an ongoing basis with temple sex priests (prostitutes both male and female).
The point of the yearly ceremonies was to have the most successful of the citizens share their productive power. All participants were attempting to reach climax at the same time under the direction of these most successful people. The purpose was to attract the benevolent attention of the fertility spirits in behalf of all the participants. The goal in this was for the society to receive their blessing for the prosperity of the near future. The spirits who had blessed these highly successful citizens would approach the group, be brought to orgasm, through the activity of the group, and become somewhat addicted to the periodic sexual activity that was staged for them continually in the temple.
It seems that these spirits could not enjoy orgasmic sensation within their own non-corporeal bodies, but they could feel the ecstasy of the human pleasure through these rites. The appetites of the spirits are greater than those of humans however, so to appease their sensuality, mass, coordinated human climax was required. This activity was central to the success of the society because it retained the polyamoric relationship with these benevolent spirits. Only group orgasms could attract and retain the attention of the spirits. The spirits didn't care if the rites were performed between males and females, males and males, or females and females. They could even be appeased through masturbation with no intercourse. The point was to achieve climax all together as an associated society so that society could retain the spirit relationship and be blessed.
I've not tried this approach to success, and definitely won't, but I have read of other activities that are similarly described. The Celtic Druids seem to have had a ceremony where they held orgies after being drenched in the blood of a Bull. The purpose was to appease the fertility spirits for the sake of the season's success. I told Lucy about that and she found the concept distasteful while at the same time terribly erotic. My point was not to give her any new ideas however. It wasjust to bring out the similarity with the activities of the Middle Eastern rites over 1,500 years earlier in a different part of the world.
My anthropological interest was eclipsed by Lucy's enthusiasm for the subject. It turns out that she has been practicing this in a home in Redmond Washington for over six months. She claims that there are more than 360 people in Seattle involved in this secret group. I was shocked, and still am. Starbuck isn’t just your normal, run of the mill meeting place anymore.

what is paganism?
at 05:14 on November 30th, 2008
Interesting, however Paganism is rather crude as a description since those religions that preceded the modern large movements where not at all the same form one to the other and should be distinguished by their names. Even if their are some similarities fund here and there. Paganism is not the right choice of word definition. To mention What the name is and the origin of this religion would be more appropriate.

Paganism is meant to be a broad designation. Even in the neo paganism that we find today there are incredible amalgamations of practice and belief. The word basically means "rustic religion" and connotes polytheistic beliefs. A more colloquial definition would be "Non Christian".
The problem with defining paganism is similar to that of defining Christianity. There are over 3,000 different sects and schisms of Christianity these days, and many of them are shooting at each other over the fence. The same is true of Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and other "old" belief systems.
Similarly, even the ancient "pagans" divided their gods into different aspect. Ashtoreth, Moleck, Mammon, Baal, Ishtar, Marduk, and on and on, were all non Christian, and were all members of polytheistic pantheons of gods.
There were large "pagan" movements in the past. Roman emperor worship, worship of the Greek pantheon of gods, Egyptian worship of Isis and Osiris, and countless other examples. Thus, the literal definition of the word pagan as a rustic, rural religion is no longer sufficient to support its meaning.
Pagan beliefs have also invaded "Christianity". The Easter Bunny is a symbol of the same type of fertility and sex glorification that was highlighted in this article. The Cross of Christian myth which replaced the post that is mentioned in the bible is a Phallic Symbol (the symbol of an erect make genital). December 25th is the birthday of Mithras, the invincible Sun. Jesus was born some time in the fall. The Catholics took the concept of paganism to a new place from the middle of the 4th century throughout the dark ages.
The point is that depending on where you are in time, and where you are geographically, paganism, though still present and identifiable by common definitive threads throughout history and throughout the world, will be different in some of its beliefs and practices as well.
My experience at the coffee shop proved this to be true. Paganism is certainly different now than it was 4,000 years ago in the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Middle East. But its remarkably similar too. A reductionist approach to defining the term, although it would be nice and simple, would be difficult due to the rich, ancient, and evolving meaning of the word.

Very good reply and I wish it would have been in the post as well. Christianity and Islam could be compared to the Pre Judeo Religions as well, since they have saints and angels as well as evil and so on, all fund as Gods or half Gods in previous religion. Now some embrace old religions again nowadays and miss interpret those or change them and/or mix them up wish is not kindly seen by those that followed their religion, such as the Northlander of the Scandinavian and Germanic Tribes and their Gods, Odin and company... They had to practice their religion in secret for over 1000 years and even though a minority they are have remained loyal to their roots and certainly do not like the melting pot of Paganism or neo-peganism, Good Comment and post.
Thank you.

I agree with your comparison of the Pentatuchal religions having taken on some of the attributes of the pagans. The Primitive Mosaic Religion of the Abrahamic Jews was primarily monotheistic, but it changed to adopt some of the pagan beliefs as time went on. The belief in angels and demons in foundational Judaism was still under that monotheistic theme. The Almighty God Yahweh (Jehovah) created angels and gave them free will. This freedom was a license for some to rebel. The same happened in the realms of man, and rebellious sin included the types of sexual "depravity" and spiritual "depravity" that is enshrined in the pagan religions. To Yahweh, the creator of heaven and earth, devotion to the creation rather than to the creator was a high offence. This did not prevent the Jews from adopting the "polluted" worship of the surrounding nations however.
Christianity was the same way, being founded on the Hebrew Scriptures and using them for its authority and base. Early Christianity was not a poly theistic religion. Jesus was the Son of God, a Creation, and not the creator himself. Angels and demons were still creations and not gods in the worshipful sense of the word. This changed over time too, as you've mentioned. Christianity also adopted many of the pagan practices of the nations around them, worshiping saints, Mary, and giving devotion to the State. Purists of primitive religion would call that polluted as well.
You point to the Norse and Germanic belief systems which absolutely were polytheistic. The monotheism of the old and new testament were somewhat unique in their holding to a Almighty God as the designer a creator of the Universe. A universal sovereign if you will. I know of no other religion that had this element so clearly defined.
Time changes organizations though, as can be seen in every religion. It dilutes itself and osmosis occurs over time. Look at politics and commerce too as an example. We leave the primary precepts upon which our country and our economic system was founded. We blend it with other beliefs and methods and it begins to loose it's cohesion. This is the great cycle of man, to rise high and pure, and to fall degraded and confused, only to rise again on a fresh set of principle and ambition. Most religion fits that pattern too, or so it seems...

I appreciate the kind words. As far as basic misunderstandings, I find that these forums help to broaden the understanding of the writer as well as the reader when these comments take place. A quick question and answer session grounds the opinions and knowledge base of everyone and is very healthy. Thanks again...

New Benevolent Beings Website http://www.benevolentspirits.com//
Hello,
Since August of 2007, we have been cataloging photographs and videos that until this point in our existence have never been documented in previous history to our knowledge. We have been absolutely compelled to get out and capture this phenomenon since last August in all weather conditions because of its incredible nature.
The images appear in various shapes and sizes, and also seem to be making what look like “Aerial Crop Circles”. We have spoken with many individuals in the paranormal field and they feel these are related to the changes in the earth’s atmosphere and more photonic energy entering our planet. We can feel their presence and believe they are “Benevolent Spirits” here to help our planet at a time in history where it is desperately needed.
We believe that people will be amazed to know of their existence. We have done some serious soul searching to decide when to release this information, and we strongly feel that the Mayan Prophecies are coming to pass, and the hour is upon us to enlighten the world to their existence and help awaken humanity to its calling.
These benevolent beings could awaken the world to the previously unknown. We truly believe that this could chart never before explored territory, much like the exploration of Christopher Columbus, to prove to the world that the earth wasn’t really flat at all.
Many of the images appear to be very Mayan looking in their appearance which leads me to believe, did the Mayan civilization really have it right? Will the year 2012 be what so many are now predicting, as the Mayan Civilization previously did?
The patterns of “Sacred Geometry” are absolutely incredible. We would welcome any information or possible interpretation for study to see if these beings could be sending messages for humanity at a time where help is so badly needed in the world. We have a short Youtube video for your viewing pleasure at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=As6rr195Z_U or visit our website at http://www.benevolentspirits.com//

Simply put, Paganism is something that's not under a religious sect, but free thinking people. One of the rites that they practice which is also widely being practiced today is the being appeased through masturbation or with no intercourse.

Those circles, seem like the camera lens are dirty. These "special" effects can easily be created using image editing tools.
But anyway, the pagan sex rites seem pretty interesting. I am a fan of mass orgies. Its exciting that everyone gets to climax together. Any contact address in Seattle for reference. I am glad to contribute in pleasing the spirits by climaxing together.
