Photographer Andy Craddock is being sued by the Diocese of Truro for doing a photoshoot using semi-naked models inside St. Michael Penkivel Church as the backdrop.

St. Michael Penkivel is a 13th-century village church in Cornwall, western England. According to Jeremy Downing, spokesman for the Diocese of Truro, the photos are "deeply offensive" and deplored by his church for the way in which "sacred space" was profaned.

"The pictures would be deeply offensive to people who view the place for regular worship. That's not what these buildings are intended for and he is deliberately taking advantage of the situation.

"Whether he's gone in there legally or illegally he is using the setting for an entirely improper purpose," Downing said.

Craddock has stated he does not understand the diocese's anger, and sees his photos only as art.

Typical artist, everyting is "art", never poor tast or obscene.     Stop being self indulgent Andy, think of other peoples feelings, not just your own

Very good mr. Craddock!! Good work! Don't stop!

Decades ago the nazi's burnt books. Now the Anglican Church wants to   d e s t r o y   your pictures. Good gracious me, haven't  they learned anything!!??

If someone believes in something: ok. But don't maltreat others who think or act different!

Jan,

Let me and my artist friends come to you house and defecate in your living room in the artistic performance "Clearance". I'm sure you won’t mind since it is art, although you may think of if a little bit differently then my artistic group.

Let Art rules!

but presumably the Church was ok about being portrayed in connection with a fictional serial killer?   Having said that this is more soft porn than art - better work would have been far more shocking.

You know, not a lot shocks me, and I'm not religious. But I find these DEEPLY offensive.  How on earth anyone could view these photos, religious or not, and say that this was acceptable is beyond me.  I'm a woman and completely comfortable with soft and hard images, in fact I enjoy them!...but to me these are simply too far.  Next to someones gravestone? Laying on an altar with a cross in her hand between her legs?  Yep, tasteless, not very arty and a bit shit!

whilst I believe Andy is wrong with regard to the location for this photoshoot, I think the pictures are very well taken.

Not to mention completely offensive to a church, a place of worship, and religious people but also the shittiest photography and awful models. horrible art, i know this because I'm in the photography business. They aren't even good photos its grainy the lighting sucks the subject and idea resembles just another horny teenager. Lame.

I think that to be perfectly honest everyone has made a big over reaction, i truly appreciate the fact that religious believers may find this offensive, you all may not like the fact he has chosen this church as his backdrop, but do not slate his skills as a photographer, I for one support his work.
