Anthony Beavers, 19, Shot and Killed in Atlanta East Point Metro
Train service was temporarily interrupted when 19-year-old Anthony Beavers was shot and killed late last night at the East Point MARTA station in Atlanta.
The shooting happened at approximately 10:40 pm, witnesses told AJC, near an elevator at the south end of the station. Police are still reviewing security surveillance from the station. Officials have no suspects in custody at this time.
Police haven't established a motive for the shooting and high school teachers say Beavers didn't seem to have any enemies.
Anthony Beavers was a recent graduate of Jonesboro High School, and was considered extremely bright. He was a member of the chess team and took first place in last year's Clayton County tournament for the adult division.
Georgia's Concealed Weapons Law
The shooting follows the expansion of Georgia's concealed weapons laws, which went into effect in July 2008. Georgia allows law-abiding citizens (with all the proper paperwork and background checks), to legally carry a concealed weapon in a number of public places, including Atlanta's public transit system MARTA.
It has taken 10 years to expand the current laws. CCP holders still cannot bring a weapon into a political or sporting events. Consuming alcohol is prohibited while carrying a weapon. Additionally one cannot carry into public (government) buildings.
