It has been a long and challenging road for Democratic Representative Anthony Weiner ever since news broke of his inappropriate conduct and relationships with other women, and today the Congressman has announced that he'll resign from his post.

"I'd hoped to be able to continue the work that the citizens of my district elected me to do '" to fight for the middle class and those struggling to make it," he told reporters at a press conference earlier today (June 16). "Unfortunately, the distraction that I have created has made that impossible, so today I am announcing my resignation from Congress."

According to People.com, Weiner's speech lasted a little more than four minutes despite ongoing disruption from the crowd. At one point a heckler shouted "Bye bye, pervert."

Still the 46-year-old was keen on expressing his gratitude to those who had experienced the ordeal alongside him. "I'm here today to again apologize for the personal mistakes I have made and the embarrassment I have caused," he said. "I made this apology to my neighbors and constituents, but I make it in particular to my wife, Huma."

The 35-year-old aide to Hillary Clinton, whose expecting her first child with Weiner, was noticeably absent from today's press conference.

Meanwhile a source close to the Congressman told press, "At least the nightmare is over," referring to the constant press circus and Weiner's repeated dishonesty and lack of integrity.

This morning Nancy Pelosi seemed upset with the whole ordeal, telling reporters at her weekly press conference, "If you are here to ask a question about Congressman Weiner I won't be answering. I have made the statements I am going to make."

New York Democratic Representative Carolyn McCarthy also shared, "Hopefully, we're hearing he might resign in a couple of days."

Anthony Weiner's resignation comes less than a week after a rep for the Congressman revealed that he would be taking a leave of absence from Capitol Hill to seek treatment.

"Congressman Weiner departed this morning to seek professional treatment to focus on becoming a better husband and healthier person," spokeswoman Risa Heller said in a statement.

The disgraced politician held a press conference back on June 6th, at which time he admitted to tweeting a lewd photo of himself and communicating online with six women over the past three years.

It's ridiculous for anyone in public office to think they can get away with something like this, but to do it repeatedly is stupid. I think there were some other politicians with worse offenses, but this one grew out of hand really fast and I don't think there was any way for Weiner to recover.  Hopefully politicians will smarten up and stop doing things like this, there are enough other problems in our country. african mango free trial
