As a producer, Judd Apatow has had successful movies, movies that did okay, and a few that flopped. As a director, however, its been nothing but success...till now. The 40-Year-Old Virgin grossed $109.4 million domestically and $177.3 million worldwide. Knocked Up grossed $148.7 million domestically and $219 million worldwide. But if Friday estimates are true, then Apatow has his first flop as a director. Funny People, according to early estimates, only grossed $8 million on Friday. It may only gross a little over $20 million over the weekend.

Yet, Apatow isn't the only one disappointed this weekend. The estimates have Funny People as the #1 movie for Friday. You know it's a slow weekend when the #1 movie only grosses $8 million.

Its been a slow summer for Hollywood. The result of the 2007 writer's strike. The strike affected TV immediately, but is now affecting the movie biz. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and sleeper hit The Hangover have been the only stand out hits.

I'm quite surprised, I love his movies, but it's always hard to do a 'serious comedy' I think.
