With the first-leg of Champions League round of 16 in motion, Premier League giants Arsenal face the daunting task against their German opponents Bayern Munich on Wednesday. The Gunners will host the Germans – who are almost unbeatable this season – at the Emirates stadium in London.

The North London club have never won the European tournament before and have only made the final on one occasion—something they'll be looking to rectify here. Bayern, on the other hand, have been to the final a staggering nine times in their history, and have won four of those nine finals. That's good for third on the all-time Champions League winners list, but it's also good for first on the all-time Champions League final losers list as well, which they'll be looking to avoid no doubt this season in the competition.

Bayern haven't conceded a goal since reunification or something and apparently don't even bother to bring a goalkeeper to games nowadays, such is their dominance. In fact, I've heard that they've asked for Squillaci on an emergency loan, just so they can play him upfront for the LOLZ.

Arsene will have big chocies to make with his starting lineup, in his press conference he stressed the importance of not rushing and staying in the tie. So I think we may see a four man midfield again, with Podolski playing just off of Walcott upfront.

Theo gave Bayern defender Dante a torrid time when England played Brazil at Wembley recently and, though the Germans don't seem to be suceptible to anything bar nuclear fallout, pace is apparently one possible asset that they kinda sort of don't like.

As for Bayern's attacking threat, Arjen Robben and Mario Gomez can't get in the team at the moment. Apparently they've taken to sitting behind Manuel Neur's goal and talking about existential philosophy with him, just to keep him company.

 Did You Know:

Arsenal and Bayern Munich have met four times before in the Champions League, with the Gunners victorious just once.

Their last meeting was also at the Champions League last-16 stage, which the German side won 3-2 on aggregate in 2004-05.

Olivier Giroud has four assists in the group stages of the Champions League this season; only Zlatan Ibrahimovic has more with five.

Lukas Podolski has scored three goals from three shots on target in the Champions League this term. He is 17/2 to score the first goal in the game with BetVictor.

Bayern Munich had the most different goalscorers in the group stage, with nine.

The German side also conceded the fewest shots on target in the group stage, with just 17 against.

The Bavarians last won in England in April 2001, with a 1-0 quarter-final victory over Manchester United on course to winning the tournament.

Mario Gomez has scored 25 goals in 26 Champions League starts.
