April ArtWalk – Downtown LA.

Started the evening out at Cole's for French Dips. It was packed. Walk was crowded; maybe it was the full moon. Seemed to be more photography showings than usual and a lot of the galleries had musical performances in addition to the art installments. The highlight of the evening was the last song of a musical duo at the Regent, their huge sound seeming amplified by the simple red mood lighting and the theatrical red curtain behind them. We caught a few songs of Doc & Ryan at the Crewest Gallery http://www.myspace.com/docandryan, a funky mix of classical Cello and Hip-Hop. Very cool!

And of course, I'm leaving the best for last. In a gallery on Spring Street, near the Regent – Performance Art – oddly beautiful, touching and startling all at the same time. The three nude models stood still, barely touching in an odd family unit, eyes closed and motionless while the artist, charcoal in hand, knelt before them sketching furiously. Others didn’t quite know what to think, some just stopping mid-step through the doorway or backing out quickly to avoid interrupting the intimate scene.

On the way back to the car, we wandered into "The Hive" gallery - the outer gallery was mainstream, but as you pass through a small doorway, it was like stepping into a rabbit hole going deeper into smaller rooms. Art and sculptures were in every space and it was almost visually impossible to interpret all the paintings, sketches, lamps, and jewelry. The final room was lined in purple shag carpet with gothic hand-bound books.  Definitely worth the trek past 7th street.  As always, looking forward to next month’s walk.  See you on May 8th.
