Atheists attacked and large public support for Christianity
As an atheist, I never realized that I was a threat to take down the remains of the World Trade Center. That I was trying to "finish the job" that Muslim terrorists committed on 9/11/01.
I must be, because some guy named Shawn Akers (who I haven't even heard of until 5 minutes ago) stated that on Christian nationalist radio. In fact, he stated that people like me are committing "religious McCarthyism" for opposing by people like him, promoting religion by our government.
See, this is in regards to the supposed WTC cross, which is as Mr. Akers states, truly a miracle. Who would have thought in the aftermath of thousands of steel beams that made up the WTC towers, two of them will survive to make the crossbeam design of the Christian Cross? What are the odds? This god could have stopped the attack itself, but that would have been too easy. Much better to have a cross for people to idolize.
Now, the thing is, groups like American Atheists only wanted atheists to have their own symbol at the site. Not a bad idea, because at least a couple of the hundred people who died on that morning were atheists. Also, atheism had nothing to do with the motivation of the attack, which was of course purely religious based.
Look, this is a religious symbol, it has value to Christians as a religious symbol, but people like Mr. Akers pretend, when questioned about the legality of it, that it is actually a secular and non-religious symbol.
Also, to his point about McCarthyism, lives were destroyed under McCarthyism. Actors and actresses and directors kicked out of jobs, nobody is making you lose your job Mr. Akers. Get a grip.
Now, for even worse news. In a recent poll of a thousand Americans, 32% favor making Christianity the official religion of their state, and 34% favor making Christianity the official religion of the nation as a whole. Now, since about 80% of Americans are Christians, this means about 40% or more of American Christians favoring making their religion the official state religion.
Not surprisingly, the highest support comes from Republicans, who favor Christianity as the official religion at a rate of 55%.
This is scary and very concerning. There are many people in the Republican party who not only oppose marriage equality for gays and lesbians, but still support the idea of states being able to imprison and lock up gay men for consensual sex.
For example, former Republican U.S. Senator and failed presidential candidate Rick Santorum whined about dog/man sex after state anti-sodomy bans were overturned. One of the major parties in America is the party of theocracy, and it will continue to be so until the religious right-wing have power. You can join Americans United for Separation of Church and State or the American Civil Liberties Union in order to oppose theocracy in the government.
