At the end of day three, Australia finished 3/111 - 339 runs behind the Proteas. Cowan finished just one run off a half-century while Clarke overcame a slow start to surge to 34 not out. So maybe now a draw is a chance.

Earlier, Australia looked as if it would struggle to even last until lunchtime tomorrow.

After the away team was bowled out for 450, Cowan and David Warner took to the crease. The Aussies started off with a bang but the meat quickly fell off the bone when Warner was caught out at slip for just four.

Rob Quiney came in next and started firing before he was Dale Steyn burst his debut bubble for nine on the boundary line.

Ricky Ponting was next in, then he was out again. Punter could only muster a duck (off three balls), making it 8, 0, 0, 62 and 0 in his last five meetings with the Proteas.

Steyn finished with one wicket while Morne Morkel capped day three with two wickets.
