RETURNING star Shane Watson was immediately into action as Australia's opener in the one-day international against the West Indies in Canberra.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat with Watson to start the innings in his first international outing since straining his calf muscle during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne more than a month ago.

Watson, 31, is attempting to rebuild his standing as a premier opener in time for the anticipated four-Test series against India in the sub-continent. The big opener made a cautious start before cracking the sixth ball he faced through point for four in the opening over.

After seven overs the Aussies were 0-41 with Watson 25 from 23 balls and Finch on 15.

Watson replaced Usman Khawaja at the top of the Aussie line-up with Finch given another chance after poor scores of 16, 4, 10 and 11 in his limited-over outings so far this summer.
