JG Ballard, author of Empire of the Sun and Crash, has died at the age of 78 after a long battle with prostate cancer.
The English author spent three years in a Shanghai internment camp, which would form the basis of Empire of the Sun, later made into a movie starring a young Christian Bale. Ballard later joined the RAF, and studied medicine for a while before switching to literature.
He wrote 15 books, including the bleak and deviant Crash, which was filmed (and Canadianized) by David Cronenburg.

The writer had been ill "for several years" according to his agent Margaret Hanbury and passed away on Sunday. He had been battling prostate cancer since 2006.
