Update made on 11/01/10:

Avatar has seen continued success this past weekend, its 4th weekend at the box office. As of now, Avatar has made $1.3 billion in total. This past weekend Avatar broke the record for the 4th best weekend at the box office making $48,500,000. Avatar has surpassed Titanic with this 4th weekend record, as Titanic made 20 million less.

Original Story:

As of this Thursday January 7th, James Cameron's Avatar became the #2 highest grossing movie of all time. Avatar beat out Star Wars: Episode III for the #2 position on the top-selling movies list behind Titanic which holds the #1 spot. This new record for Avatar is a result its gross of $1.14 billion in global ticket sales.

According to Box Office Mojo, "Avatar" took in $6.1 million Thursday, putting its cumulative gross at $380.5 million, $270,000 above what "Star Wars: Episode III - Return of the Sith" took in five years ago. The domestic gross for "Avatar" will top $400 million this weekend, making it the tenth film, and second-fastest, to reach that plateau. The Batman movie "The Dark Knight" did so in 18 days.

The next record Avatar is set to possibly break is the record for the highest gross in the fourth weekend of a film's release. That record is currently held by Cameron's Titanic with $28.7 million. If Avatar continues to do as well as it has at the box office, it could soon become the highest grossing film of all time. Avatar also currently holds the record for the fastest movie to achieve $1 billion in global ticket sales.
