Avatar broke the record as the top grossing film of all times just week ago, but already it is rumoured that director James Cameron is planning a sequel. Avatar-2 is likely to hit the theaters in distant future. Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. is in negotiations with Cameron over the sequel and even a possible trilogy. Murdoch said the company had "very early talks" with Cameron who already has ideas about the sequel.

Cameron's Avatar enjoyed tremendous success with audiences worldwide, despite criticism from religious and anti-racist groups. Fans all over the world are likely to welcome the sequel of Avatar, although historically sequels have always fared worse than the originals.

Since talks are at such a preliminary stage, it remains unclear whether Cameron will direct an Avatar sequel or simply opt to produce. Nor is it apparent whether Captain Obvious will be returning to pen the sequel's screenplay. And don't even ask about a possible release date. Given how long it took Cameron to make the first film, a realistic date for Avatar 2 would be sometime in the summer of 2022

Avatar was nominated for nine Academy Awards this year, with James Cameron nominated for Best Director.

I though that the first one was great and must see. The ending was perfect and even though I would like to see another such masterpiece, I some how feel a spin off would kill the first one and it may be best to leave it as it is. Make a movie about Earth and our destruction of it and how we may save it to rebuild what we lost and destroyed with out killing each others into extinction.

From what I understand, Cameron is shooting Battle Angel Alita next-- it's a film based on the manga and anime series. He said on MTV that they were already a year into production design on the project.

i agree with Uwe Paschen; i think that the events on Pandora in Avatar lead to an interesting potential to show "friendly humans" learn from the Na'vi on how to live more harmoniously with nature. Though i also agree that a spin off might lessen the impact of the single film. It would have to be very much it's own entity or a very close-timed "the next day" kind of thing involving future relations between humans and Na'vi going better than how the initial events unfolded...

i didn't know that the film was targeted by anti-racist groups... what was racist about the film other than humanity itself??
