B.C. Liberals dominate fundraising race
This is an interesting tidbit that I came across in today's Victoria paper:
The province's official Opposition was once again virtually shut out in the corporate sector, raising just $25,000 from corporate and business donors, or less than one dollar for every 168 brought in by the Liberals.
And while the province's unions did kick in about $220,000 for the New Democrats, the bulk of their money -- over 90 per cent -- came from individual donors.
In total the New Democrats raised just over $3 million in 2007. Of that, 90 per cent came from individuals, most of whom gave less than $1,000 each.
There were some oddities among the more than 2,500 businesses and individuals who forked out for the Liberals.
The National Football League's Seattle Seahawks for example gave $500, while the Edmonton Oilers, who eliminated the Vancouver Canucks from the NHL playoffs earlier this week, chipped in $400.
Alan de Genova, who is running for the left-leaning Vision Vancouver party's mayoral nomination, gave $900, a move that likely won't sit well with his fellow party member and mayoral rival, NDP MLA Gregor Robertson.
Also giving to the Liberals was Retirement Concepts, owners of a scandal-plagued chain of seniors' homes across the province. That company chipped in $1,200.
Unlike in federal politics, there are no limits on union, corporate or individual donations in B.C. politics.
