Culture police at work again? Well surely it's weird that high school students in BC, when they study literature at all, are assigned only American and British works. Canadian writers are off the local radar.  Now one work by a Canadian writer must be included in each year of the high school curriculum. Sounds like a good move.

High school English courses in B.C. will soon be required to include at least one “significant” work of Canadian literature. The provincial ministry recently revamped the curriculum for English Language Arts courses for grades 8 to 12 and included the provision after strong lobbying from various groups, most notably ArtStarts, a B.C.-based non-profit educational arts organization for youth.

jayp, I like this idea. There are definitely some worthy Canadian books out there and not nearly enough people know about them.

Thanks jayp. Can you recommend any CanLit in particular?

Hmmm. BC has plenty to offer: George Bowering and Ryan Knighton's Cars is worth a try. Then there's Ryan Knighton's Cockeyed, Sharon Thesen's The Good Bacteria, Anne Stone's Delible. Moving east, there's Michael Ondaatje, Margaret Atwood, Nicole Brossard, Mordecai Richler, and countless more across the country.

Oh, I never knew that. When I was in highschool, we focused primarily on CanLit and the struggle for survival. Interesting.

This picture was taken in Chowrasta, a market place situated in the heart of Geortwon, Penang, Malaysia. There's a few used bookshop there.
