If you happen to be in Sri Lanka this weekend, look above your head for a colourful display of balloons gracing the sky. The Sri Lanka balloon festival has started and it involves between 80 and 100 participants in about 25 different balloons.

The inaugural Sri Lanka Balloon Festival was held in 2003 and since then has been continued almost biennially. March-April 2008 is slated for the third such gathering. The 2008 festival has been declared a national event by the Ministry of Tourism and is organized by the Ceylon Airship and Ballooning Club (CABC) headed by its Chairman, Captain Anil Jayasinghe who is Sri Lanka’s pioneer and only hot air balloonist. It is currently the only aviation event in the country.

80-100 participants from Europe and Japan are expected together with 25 hot air balloons.
