Here's a bit of wishful thinking from a brave state school in Michigan -- words and phrases that should be banned from the English language because of their (over) use or general lack of usefulness.

I'm not sure I agree with the inclusion of all the words and phrases included in this year's list. For instance, I think it's hard to argue that the term "bailout" is overused or misused given the trillions of dollars of taxpayers dollars thrown at mismanaged corporations and banks.

And I also think they missed a few terms that should have been on this list -- classics such as "grow" when used as a verb, for example, "I have a strategy to grow my company."

Or how about "perfect storm?" I know, you're thinking that's so 2006, but just think how many times the term was used as an excuse for the market meltdown a few months ago.

DETROIT - Lake Superior State University's 2009 list of banished words and phrases:

-green

-carbon footprint or carbon offsetting

-maverick

-first dude

-bailout

-Wall Street/Main Street

-monkey

-icon or iconic

-game changer

-staycation

-desperate search

-not so much

-winner of five nominations

-it's that time of year again

If we are going to try and ban words, I can think of some better ones than these...

Of course I totally agree with "The Perfect Storm"...what a stupid phrase.

here's a phrase to ban in 2009: financial products.

ha ha, what a joke. call them what they really are, jokes or excrement. or if you prefer  fancy-schmancy, losing propositions.

What do they have against 'green'?

:(

I don't think they have anything against going (or being) green, just the fact that it has been sorely over used and abused.

Words themselves get run into the ground and lose their effectiveness sometimes...

How about " THE BIG THREE"

Actually I think they are changing it to "the automakers formerly known as the big three".

really? what is the point of banned words, seriously, I mean look at the list,

-green ( its a color)

-carbon footprint or carbon offsetting ( not to fond of it)

-maverick ( if used outside the political sense, it is acceptable)

-first dude ( no one uses this anyway)

-bailout ( un-educated people use this term)

-Wall Street/Main Street ( its a street name)

-monkey ( its an animal)

-icon or iconic ( no point )

-game changer ( the election is over with, get over it you pricks)

-staycation ( i agree with this one, it is lame)

-desperate search ( no point in banning this, )

-not so much ( no point)

-winner of five nominations ( it'll just appear next year)

-it's that time of year again ( I agree)

this is my opinion, why don't we focus on somthing a bit more constructive, instead of banning words, create new ones, instead of listining to your T.V. all the time, ( because most of the words that are " banned " are from the media and the like ) Go outside, do somthing with your life, study, travel, or somthing else, just don't waste your time banning words.
