Beach Boys Brian Wilson, Mike Love Demand Credit On Katy Perry's California Gurls - Claim Line Lifted From 1965 California Girls

Music company Rondor Music has apparently fired off a letter to Capital Records which represents Katy Perry regarding her hit single California Gurls

Rondor Music which owns the Beach Boys hit song California Girls  is demanding Capital Records give Beach Boys Mike Love and Brian Wilson credit Perry's song for using the line I wish they could all be California Girls.

The line was uttered by Snoop Dogg towards the end of California Gurls.

A record industry source told Page Six, "Rondor Music has sent a letter to Capitol on behalf of Mike Love and Brian Wilson, saying Katy has cribbed one of the most famous lyrics in history, so Love and Wilson should be entitled to a writing credit and a portion of the royalties."

But Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys have praised Katy's song and are taking a more hands off approach to this dispute.

Wilson's rep said, "Rondor owns the track and called Brian and Mike, saying they were going to complain. Brian likes Katy's record and doesn't know where the situation stands." Love's rep said, "Mike and Brian wrote the song . . . but any legal action is up to Rondor."

It's a silly demand.

Smacks of Mike Love completely. Love would do something like that. Brian wouldn't. But you know . . . people should make their own lyrics up. George Harrison got sued for copyright infringement over the similarity between "My Sweet Lord"  and the Chiffon's 1963 hit "He's So Fine". The melody line and chord progressions are very, very similar. And the ruling was that Harrison "subconsciously" plagiarized the song.
