BED INTRUDER SONG!!! (now on iTunes)

Bed Intruder Song Auto-Tune Of Huntsville News Report About Attempted Rape Is An iTunes Hit

The Bed Intruder Song video has been steadily climbing the charts on iTunes reaching number 35 not bad for a music mash-up form the Gregory Brothers, the guys behind Auto-Tune News.

The Bed Intruder Song (in case you missed it) is a music video and iTunes single based on a Huntsville news report about an attempted rape. The intruder broke in through a window in an Huntsville, AL apartment but was thwarted by the brother of the victim, Antoine Dodson.

Dodson's personality and conviction shine through the otherwise straight as nails news report.

The Gregory Brothers spotted the bed intruder news video on Youtube, contacted Antoine Dodson and with his permission and co-operation, created a mash-up using the voice modulation software, Auto-Tune.

In a week or so since its release the song sat number 35 on the overall iTunes charts and number 3 on the itunes R&B charts, with the Bed Intruder Song clocking 11,000 downloads and the Youtube video over 9 million views - impressive numbers indeed.

But critics are wary as this excerpt from NPR reveals

Jason King, a music professor at NYU, says he's wary of the song's popularity. "It's catchy. It has a really good hook," he says. But it's problematic, too. He says "there's a way in which the aesthetics of black poverty — the way they talk and they speak and they look — sort of becomes this fodder for humor without any interest in the context of the conditions in which people actually live."

Dodson himself hasn't forgotten the context of the song. "Some people do take it to be a joke," he says. "I don't, and neither does my sister and neither does my family. It's funny. We laugh at it all the time and listen to the song over and over. But that doesn't change the fact that this was a serious event."

Besides that Antoine Dodson stands to make some money off the iTunes downloads of the Bed Intruder Song, plus additional money from merchandise sails - yes, of course there are Bed Intruder Song t-shirts - not bad for a young passionate young man from the Lincoln Park projects in Huntsville.
