Bert and Ernie Gay Marriage Petition: Would You Sign?
Petition for Bert & Ernie to Marry on Sesame Street
A petition on change.org hopes to get enough signatures to get Bert and Ernie, Sesame Street's beloved and obviously-gay roommates, to finally make honest Muppets of each other.
Cohabiting gay couples are commonplace in Bert's and Ernie's hometown of New York City. Did anyone stop to think that maybe Bert and Ernie don't want to marry? Maybe they're happy just cohabiting. Marriage, while a civil right, isn't necessarily the apotheosis of each and every relationship.
They're definitely common-law spouses by now, as they've been together since 1969. They're the real deal. In arguing that this marriage petition is inappropriate, I'm not saying that Bert and Ernie shouldn't be able to marry: I'm saying that it's not our call.
Aside from the fact that you can't write television by committee (otherwise Ned Stark would be a lot less dead), let's take a second to think about the muppets.
Bert and Ernie live in a children's puppet show, not a reality show. Maybe they don't want their relationship dictated by the whim of the internet voting public. Did you ever think of that? Huh? Did you?
You can view and, if you're so inclined, sign the Bert and Ernie marriage petition via the link below.
We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful. Only that they allow Bert & Ernie to marry or even add a transgender character to the show. It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different.
Are Bert and Ernie Actually Gay? (Hint: Duh)
To those still in denial about Bert's and Ernie's sexuality... oh, come on.
Some muppets are gay. Get over it.
Update: Sesame Workshop continues to live in denial, saying in a statement, "Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."
