'For the Bible Tells Me So' should be required viewing
Monday, November 19th, I had the good fortune of attending a special Nashville Film Festival and Human Rights Campaign-sponsored screening of For the Bible Tells Me So, a documentary that was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The film, directed by Daniel Karslake, explores the relationship between homosexuality and Judeo-Christianity in the United States. The film consists of interviews with members of five different families from across the country, including that of Chrissy Gephart, daughter of former presidential nominee Dick Gephart, and Episcopalian Bishop of New Hampshire Gene Williams. For the Bible Tells Me So contains footage and commentary showcasing both the anti-homosexual and civil rights movements. Notably, while a majority of the prominent theologians and religious leaders interviewed for the documentary support social equality for homosexuals, the anti-homosexual perspective is voiced primarily through clips from television and radio recordings. Nevertheless, For the Bible Tells Me So remains a panoramic endeavour: an assortment of video and sound bites, photo slideshows, and even an informative cartoon that all serve to highlight the well-worn debate in the United States over homosexuality. But, at the documentary’s crux lies the condemnation of the perverse use of God’s Word to justify cruelty, hatred, and violence—the unholy fruits of homophobia.
