If you think it is Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise, you are not even close. It may come as a surprise that he is not even from Hollywood.

When we think of the movie capital of the world we think of Hollywood, California. Actually, the world’s movie capital is in Bombay. This place is called Bollywood, which is the nickname for the Indian film industry....We would assume that the United States produces more movies a year than anywhere else in the world. Bollywood is known to produce more than 800 films a year, when the United States produces half as many.

The biggest star is Shah Rukh Khan, also known as King Khan.

LONDON, England (CNN) — Some movie actors are lauded for their performances on the silver screen, earning themselves respect and stardom. But few, if any, Western stars are worshipped in quite the way that Shah Rukh Khan is. In a film career spanning 16 years he has risen to become the most recognizable face of Indian cinema and the most watched movie star in the world.

Shah Rukh Khan is the biggest movie star in the world. Since his debut in the 1992 feature film ‘Deewana’, he has dominated Indian cinema.

At the recent grand opening of Dubai's Atlantis Palm Jumeirah, many A-list celebrities were in attendance. When Oprah Winfrey pulled out of the party, the most exclusive suite went to Khan.

Shah Rukh Khan bagged the most exclusive suite at the opening party of Dubai's Atlantis Palm Jumeirah, leaving behind a host of Hollywood celebrities.

The over Rs 18 lakh-a night exclusive suite, suspended between the resort's two towers, was initially slated for talk show queen Oprah Winfrey but when she pulled out from the party, it went to King Khan, the Daily Mail reported.

Shah Rukh is the most famous filmstar in Middle East. Hollywood legend Robert De Niro a partner in the Nobu restaurant chain, which has a site in the resort - had to make do with an over 11 lakh-a night presidential suite.

While filmstars Lindsay Lohan and Charlize Theron bagged Rs seven lakh-a night suite in Lost Chambers submerged, alongside one of the world's largest aquariums in the depths of the Atlantis resort with a bedroom view of 65,000 sharks, rays and fish, the paper said.

The opening of Dubai's Atlantis Palm Jumeirah, a man-made island-shaped like palm tree, was attended by over two thousand film stars, popstars, supermodels and billionaires from around the world. The highlight of the ceremony was a performance by Australian singer Kylie Minogue and her 113-strong dance troupe on the beach.

His most recent release came out on Friday.

MUMBAI - Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan's latest film has been one of the studio's best-ever performers, it said Tuesday, despite fears raised by the economic downturn and Mumbai attacks.

"Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" (Match Made In Heaven), which was released on Friday, grossed around 12.5 million dollars worldwide in its opening weekend, Yash Raj Films said in a statement.

Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan, one of the biggest stars in the world's biggest movie industry, wept at a recent movie preview. It wasn't because the film was a tearjerker. He cried for Mumbai's shattered sense of security after militants laid waste to it in a bloody three-day attack.

The suspected Muslim militants "are trying to snatch away what normal people do,'' said Khan, who has found himself in the sometimes-awkward position of promoting a new comedy in a city reeling from the tragedy.

"It's small pleasures of just eating out and having a chat with your wife or your friend, of normal things like going out for a drink or a coffee or catching a movie,'' Khan told The ‘Associated Press’ in an interview.

A Muslim himself, he has no sympathy for those whose beliefs turn them to violence. Mumbai's sense of normalcy "has been snatched away, and for what? For defending things they don't know fully well, for religions they don't understand and are insecure about.''

Still, Khan hopes his new film will make people smile.

He is often described as humble.

If there's any proof of Shah Rukh Khan's global appeal, it comes in the form of 15 year old Shabana Shaheen who lives in Virginia in the U.S.

The high school student created her own Shah Rukh Khan Fansite last year -- www.freewebs.com/srkplace. All that and she's never been to India.

"The thing he's like a normal person. He's down to earth and humble...

Good Post. Yet I do not like stars. They are treated like Gods and perceived as such by their fans and I do not think it is a good idea to make Gods out of actors, who for the most part lacking a lot of qualities to even come close to be put on such pedestal. David Suzuki would fit that honour much better.

Apart from entertainment value, they are useless.

He is a addicted smoker and defied the law several times, bad role modal for the unfortunate generation.

 - looks like a pretty good role-model to me, we've got an American muslim president now who's a chain-smoker, has confessed to cocaine use, friend of domestic terrorists, allegedly dabbled in homosexuality, a staunch supporter of no-bars-held abortions, and is a liar to boot.

At least this guy is against the extreemist dogs that hide behind women and children while bombing schools and hostpitals all for the sake of Allah. Nice to see ONE Muslim speaking out against murderers.

I think his appeal is not so much as a role model on a pedestal. His appeal is that is he is very warm and human and doesn't pretend to be someone he is not. We all battle addictions. Amitjha, I have read his history extensively and I am not sure what you mean by trouble with the law.

I agree actors predominately play into the spotlight. I believe it is like anything else. It can be used for good or bad. Some actors are vain, but others do try to help. Leonardo Di Caprio for one is an enviromental advocate.

Unlike the nudity in American blockbusters, Khan will not even so much as kiss his leading lady. He has strong family values, unlike the American actors who divorce easily. That is his appeal. In his movies, he will often give up his idyllic future to be with the one he loves. I realize it is a fantasy, but one can hope love reigns. In a world of dog eats dog, it is refreshing to see movies of principal.
