Blog to the Future: Twitter Grows 1,700% Since 2008
With a tweet tweet here and a twit twit there, there's a twitpic, twitmatic, twitter twitter everywhere... Since 2007, Twitter's then-fledgling microblogging service has practically exploded into public consciousness with its cleverly concise format and its addictively quick uptake by the digerati, DJs, pundits, politicians, A-to-D-list celebrities and, well, Shaquille O'Neal. The last 6 months, however, have proven to be the site's biggest leap forward as all things Twitter have gained mention in nearly every conceivable media outlet -- to a point that talking heads like Rick Sanchez and Jon Stewart have made it part of their respective televised routines either to embrace or villify the rapid proliferation of the newly-minted twittering masses. But all the hype has amounted to an incredible increase in the site's membership — it has practically "gone nuclear".
Between February of 2008 and February 2009, Twitter grew a staggering 1,689% — from just 100,000 members last year to 1.78 million a year later. No wonder big brother Facebook is trying to shapeshift into a Twitter clone. The microblog bandwagon is retweeting its way down the information superhighway and into the open arms of new audiences...with nary a sign of slow down. Or is there? Twitter's peak is inevitable, now it's only a matter of time.

... and none of this is because of anything that Twitter has done; the service has been pretty much the same since its inception. The true phenomenon is the media-wide perception that one must discuss Twitter in order to maintain relevance. Result: Twitter overload on every channel.
