Bob Dylan Favored to Win Nobel Prize with 5:1 Odds

If you follow the bookmakers, it looks like Bob Dylan is a lock to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Ladbrokes has Bob Dylan as the favorite, with odds of his winning at 5:1 against. The 2011 Nobel Prize in Literature will be announced on Thursday, October 6.

[Update: the 2011 Nobel Prize in Literature goes to Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer, and, alas, not Bob Dylan.]

Haruki Murakami (Norwegian Wood, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle) is a close second, with 6:1 odds.

However, neither Ladbrokes nor those who patronize the betting outfit dictate who wins the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel Committee decides that. The surge in Bob Dylan's popularity on Ladbrokes is emotion-driven, but the mumbling folk-rock legend is (adn we're going out on a limb with this one) not going to win the Nobel Prize.

Here's how the Nobel Prize in Literature is described by those in charge of actually awarding it:

As described in Nobel's will one part was dedicated to “the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction”

Then again, was Haruki Murakami played by Cate Blanchett, Heath Ledger, and Richard Gere, all in the same movie? No.

The 2010 Nobel laureate in literature was Mario Vargas Llosa.
